Solar PV
Solar Photovoltaic or Solar PV systems generate electricity using solar panel collectors which are installed on the roof of your home. These panels capture the energy from the sun and convert this into electricity that can then be used to power your home.
Electrical energy is most efficient when it is utilised at the source at the time it is generated and when we set up your Solar PV system we will configure it according to your needs and lifestyle so that you achieve the most savings possible. The optimum number of panels will be determined by the needs of your household and the orientation of the panels. The Home Comfort Retrofit team will discuss the options with you and offer advice when looking at your renovation project as a whole.
SEAI GrantsSolar PV Systems
Electricity generated by your solar PV system can be used towards the base electrical load of your home – this includes your heat pump, household appliances, electric car charging etc. If there is a surplus the electricity can then be diverted to generate hot water or can be stored in a battery for later use. Any further excess can be exported to the national grid.
A domestic solar PV system consists of a number of solar panels mounted to your roof and connected into the electrical loads within your building. The solar panels generate DC (direct current – like a battery) electricity, which is then converted in an inverter to AC (alternating current – like the electricity in your domestic socket). Solar PV systems are rated in kilowatts (kW). A 1kW solar PV system would require 3 or 4 solar panels on your roof.
Electricity is generated in daylight hours using both direct sunlight and diffused light – electricity will be generated even in cloudy conditions which is an important consideration in Ireland’s climate! We will assess your home and discuss the location of the panels with you prior to making any plans. We will consider the orientation of your home, the tilt of your roof and any obstacles such as trees into consideration and will make recommendations as to the best options for your needs.
Solar PV systems are low maintenance. Annual cleaning of the panels is recommended to keep them clear of any leaves or debris that block their ability to absorb energy. Solar PV panels have a lifespan of over 25 years.
SEAI Solar PV Grants
Individual SEAI grants of up to €2100 are available for Solar PV installations. The grant value is calculated on the total maximum output of the Solar PV system, measured in kWp. The grant value is €800 per kWp up to 2 kWp and €250 for every additional kWp up to 4kWp.
